Drawings 2006-2008
I consider drawing to be one of the most direct forms of visual communication. My drawing is a representation of my personal vision as a woman, as an artist in the world I live in.
The drawings I made in between 2006 and 2008 show my fascination for children's toys and comic book and cartoon heroes for example: Batman, Pokemon and Hello Kitty.
I reference these well-known cartoon figures in combination with pop culture and universal symbols such as hearts, messenger smileys and crosses. My pieces, at first glance, may be compared to children’s drawings and teenager doodles - but are given deeper significance by the juxtaposition of symbols and what I call ‘new heroes’, (small icons of our time deliberately removed from their 'natural' surroundings). I represent these figures in various scenarios that, with an obvious simplicity, distil life down to its basic elements, at once playful and tragic. I am always looking for new alliances in my drawings that are not easy to describe in words, but more easily, can be read as pictures.
